January 27, 2004 By: Yen Hung Toshiba introduces new GSM telephone to European marketToshiba Corporation today announced that it will introduce its first handheld cellular telephone for the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standard in the middle of this year, initially to the European market. The new telephone, TCP-6000, is only 125cc in volume, weighs-in at 135g, and extremely slim at only 17 mm thick with GSMs first integrated antenna. The TCP-6000 will be exhibited at CeBIT '96 from March 14 to 20 in Hannover, Germany. Since its launch in Europe in 1992, GSM has fast gained acceptance as a global standard for digital mobile communications. Already in use in over 80 countries throughout Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle-East and Africa, GSM-based systems now have over 10 million subscribers -- a number expected to exceed 50 million worldwide by as soon as 2000. TCP-6000 was co-developed by Toshiba and Hagenuk Telecom GmbH, Germany, under a joint development agreement signed in April, 1994. Manufacturing of the phone will be undertaken by Hagenuk at its Kiel facility in Germany. Also See: free cell phones.Author Notes:
