eCognition supports Greece cellular phone network planning

The unique object-oriented remote sensing analysis system eCognition of Definiens Imaging GmbH, Munich has been introduced to the Radio Network planning division of STET Hellas Communications S.A., Athens, Greece.

In a consultancy study for TELESTET, Definiens Imaging demonstrated eCognition’s capability to generate land coverage “clutter maps” from basic satellite data. These clutter maps are the basic input to plan the deployment of relay stations in a cellular network.

The capability of eCognition to fuse various kinds of information and its object-oriented approach makes it more suitable for land cover classification than traditional pixel based methods, especially in cases where classes need to be seen in spatial relationship to each other. Definiens Imaging’s worldwide customers use eCognition in many land cover and land cover change projects, amongst them also planning and monitoring of technical infrastructure such as communication networks. The capability of eCognition to automate this process makes the generation and update of maps economically feasible.
