Osceola to benefit from cellular phone donations

Community Vision, Inc. received a donation of cellular telephones today from Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA). The fifteen recycled phones will be distributed by Community Vision to Osceola school officials and/or women who are in dangerous domestic violence situations.

The donated emergency phones are pre-programmed so victims in life-threatening situations can dial 911 with the push of a button. The phones cannot receive incoming calls. Phones for domestic violence professionals, caseworker and victim assistance volunteers are designed to help contact victims and report abuse. School teachers and administrators will use them in the event of an emergency in the classroom or school.

"Preventing violence begins with communication and immediate access to help," said Chris Gent, manager of communications for KUA. "Some kinds of emergencies might take traditional phone service out of commission. By putting one of these cellular phones in an individual's hand, instant communication with the police is possible." The donation by KUA is part of its ongoing effort to support community organizations through the donation of surplus equipment and supplies that are no longer used by the utility.
