What sets cellular phone service providers apart?

Selecting cellular phone services can be a time-consuming, complicated undertaking. Here are five areas to evaluate and help you separate the best cellular phone services from the rest.

  1. Coverage. Look carefully at the coverage map of each cell phone service you are considering. How strong is the cell phone signal in the coverage area? If you can, borrow a cell phone from a friend who uses the service you are considering. Drive around the coverage area and check the signal strength indicator at various locations.
  2. Dropped Calls. Does the cell phone service have a reputation for dropping calls? Ask friends in the area if they have had any problems with this.
  3. Billing. Before you sign on with any cell phone service, ask to see a copy of a bill. Is it easy to understand? Do they round up to the next minute? What are their payment terms? Make sure to clearly define the length of your cell phone contract and any penalty you’ll have to pay if you want to get out early.
  4. Price. Don’t forget to check the all-important bottom line. To determine exactly what cell phone service will cost, consider any extras the company is providing such as a free phone, no roaming charges or free long distance.
  5. Customer Service. This is the biggie. According to the Better Business Bureau, cell phone services are among the most complained about industries. Many cell phone customers complain about slow or unresponsive customer service. Want to find out what it might be like before you buy? Call the customer service number of the cellular service you are considering. Ask a question about say, number portability. See how long they keep you on hold.
