Cell Phone Software Developers Discuss Standards

Nokia and Vodafone are leading the way in helping cell phone software developers work toward standardized cell phone software. The companies announced an initiative in August 2004 that will make it easier for cell phone software developer to make Java applications that can run on multiple phone models.

Nokia, the world’s largest cell phone developer, and Vodafone Group, a British cellular company, said the initiative’s focus is Java-based applications. The goal is to modify the Java2 Micro Editions standards in order to define a more consistent architecture for applications.

When implemented, the standards would benefit software developers, cell phone software developer companies and consumers. Cellular phones use a variety of operating systems that each takes a different approach to running Java applications. With standards in place, Cell phone software development companies would find that their applications would fit a broader market of cellular handsets. It is currently difficult for software development companies to modify their applications to fit the growing number of handsets. The standards would make in possible for Cell phone developer companies to offer their customers a greater variety of Java-based applications.

Other major phone manufacturers including Siemens, Orange, Ericcson, T-Mobile and Sony are working with Nokia and Vodafone to support the software development initiative.

The new cell phones software development standards will be formulated within the Java Community Process with the help of Sun Microsystems, Inc., the company that created Java. The initiative should be ready to implement sometime in 2005.

Nokia and Vodafone are considering additional cell phone development software initiatives addressing security and component management.
