iTunes Coming to Motorola Mobile Phone

Motorola and Apple have announced that iTunes will soon be playing on a Motorola mobile phone. Apple will create a new iTunes mobile music player that will become the standard music application on the Motorola phone in early 2005. The new application will reportedly be called iTunes Mobile Music.

Motorola mobile phone users will be able to download songs to their phone from the iTune Jukebox on their computer. They will also be able to download some selections from the iTune music store. Motorola phones equipped with the new iTune application will use Bluetooth or USB technology to download the music files.

Mobile phones won’t have nearly the storage capacity of the popular Apple iPod mobile music player. It’s uncertain just how many songs the Motorola mobile phones will accommodate, but estimates are in the 10 to 25 range. The memory chip used in Motorola’s E398 phones sold in Europe could store two hours of music. Music play back time will be somewhat limited by mobile phone battery capacity.

The iTunes Mobile Music process is expected to appeal to a different target market than the iPod. Mobile phones are less expensive than iPods and likely to be purchased by a more casual music listener.

Motorola Mobile phones will be the first devices not manufactured by Apple to support the Fairplay DRM technology. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the mobile phone market, which will grow to 1.5 billion subscribers by the end of the year, is a “phenomenal opportunity to get iTunes in the hands of even more music lovers around the world.”

Apple’s agreement with Motorola is not exclusive. That means that iTunes Mobile Music could eventually be used on phones produced by other manufacturers.
