September 08, 2004 By: Wendy Whittaker Who makes the lightest handset? In the cellular handset market bigger is not better. The prize often goes to the smallest and the lightest handset. In the quest to make the lightest handset, the competition is fierce and the margin of victory is razor thin. In March 2004, Tuka of Japan announced what it claimed was the world’s thinnest and lightest handsets. The TK41 handset made by Kyocera is 18.8 mm thick and weighs in at 89 ounces. But don’t award the crown just yet. There are other contestants vying for the title of lightest handset. Motorola thought it had a contender. Actually it had a winner if the competition were for the thinnest handset. The V3 Razr is just 14mm thick, and that’s when it’s folded. Unfortunately, the Razr handset weighs a hefty 95 grams so we’re going to have to look elsewhere to find a light handset. Joy of joys, we’ve just found a article from CNETAsia that lists the top five lightest phones and they each weigh less than 66 grams. One, or maybe two, aren’t really handsets so will throw those out. That leaves us with three finalists for light handsets. In third place, we have the Panasonic GD55 handset with a weight of 65 grams. Coming in second, is the Haier 6000. This little beauty tips the scales at just 63 grams. And the winner of the coveted title “Lightest Handset” is…ta da…the Sony Ericcson T600! With a winning weight of 63 grams…wait! That’s the same weight as the Haier 6000. I guess they’ll have to share the title until something even smaller comes along. Also See: cell phone service comparisons.Author Notes:
