Verizon “Herd” Provides Mobile Cellular Coverage

Verizon COLTs and COWs are roaming the Midwest. No, the cellular company is not expanding into the livestock market. It is creating new means of providing cellular coverage during emergencies.

COLTs and COWs are both types of mobile cell towers that can be quickly moved to areas where cellular coverages have been disrupted.

COLT stands for Cellular on Light Truck. Verizon has two COLTs ready to provide mobile cell coverage in North Dakota. After a disaster like a flood, tornado or snowstorm, COLTs can immediately move into the area to keep cell phone coverage available. Each of the trucks has an 80-foot retractable microwave cell tower that will provide coverages to a 15-mile radius. A diesel generator is used to provide power for the mobile tower.

North Dakota emergency management officials welcome the new Verizon herd. Each COLT can handle thousands of cell calls per hour and can provide vital cellular coverages in the wake of disaster. In an emergency, all cell phones dialing 911 in the area would be routed through the COLT whether they are Verizon customers on not.

The two COLTs join one Verizon COW in the North Dakota herd. The COW, Cellular on Wheels, operates just like the COLT but requires hard electrical wiring. COWs are intended to enhance or replace cellular coverage for a longer period of time, for example, when a cell phone tower is damaged but power remains on in the area.

Verizon has herds of COLTs and COWs ready to provide emergency coverage to cell phone users in other states including Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa.
