Cellular service movie plot keeps viewers on the edge of their seat

You know you’ve reached the status of cultural icon when you have a movie named after you. A cellular service movie plot will be exposed on Sept. 10, 2004, when New Line Cinema will release “Cellular,” a movie starring Kim Bassinger and a Nokia 6600 cell phone.

“Cellular” director David Ellis describes the movie as, “Speed with a cell phone.” In a nutshell, the cellular service movie revolves around the normal tensions and frustrations of cellular phone service.

Bassinger plays a kidnapped woman who fears that she and her family are about to be killed. She makes a phone call and reaches a random number—the cell phone of a young medical student played by Chris Evans. To reach Bassinger on time, Evans must negotiate the usual perils of action flicks, plus the added perils of cell phone service.

His biggest obstacle is a cell phone battery that might run out at any minute. As he hunts for Bassigner, his cellular service cuts in and it, the static is annoying and potentially deadly (for Bassinger) and he has an unproductive encounter with customer service. Basically anything that can and does go wrong with your service happens in this 94-minute flick.

No specific provider is named in the movie. Nokia, however, did agree to have its 6600 phone in a staring role and will help promote the movie.

We won’t tell you if, in the end, the cell phone saves the day. We will guess that Evans won’t leave home again until he changes his cell service, and purchases a mobile battery charger and hands-free headset.
