Avoid Surprises with A Prepaid Cellular Phone

Do you cringe when your cell phone bill arrives? Prepaid cellular phones can help you limit your minutes and avoid the surprise of unexpected phone charges. If you want to know exactly what your phone charges will be each month, prepaid cellular phones might be right for you.

Prepaid cellular phones are easy to get and easy to use. You can find prepaid phones in retailers like Target and WalMart and convenience stores like 7-Eleven. Prepaid phones come in a starter kits that includes the phone, a battery, a card with start-up minutes and instructions on how to activate the phone.

The beauty of a prepaid cellular phone is that it doesn't require any contracts or credit checks. There are no termination fees if you want to drop the phone service. Most prepaid phones do not require you to pay an activation fee.

Once you’ve activated your prepaid cell phone, you buy cards that contain additional minutes. Prepaid phone time can cost anywhere from five to 50 cents per minute depending on how many minutes you buy at once. Be careful about loading up on too many prepaid minutes because they do expire. Most minutes are good for 90 days but some expire in just 30 days. Be sure to read the fine print.

You can track how many minutes are left on your prepaid cell phone by looking at the phone display. A minute may not actually be a minute. Some prepaid services charge two minutes for each minute of roaming. If you use all of your minutes and don’t quickly replenish your cell phone, you may have to pay a reactivation fee.

Hybrid prepaid cell phones are available that replenish minutes automatically.
