Mobile Devices Can Be Distracting To Drivers |

September 13, 2004 By: Wendy Whittaker Mobile Devices Can Be Distracting To DriversThe cell phone takes all the blame. Recent legislation seems to pin the blame for driver inattention on handheld mobile phones. But in truth, all kinds of mobile devices can distract drivers. A driver trying to operate mobile devices can be a hazard on the road. You don’t have to have your hands on a mobile device for it to be a distraction. A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicated that a mobile phone conversation in itself, even on a wireless headset device could be distracting. This is especially true if the conversation is emotionally charged (i.e. an argument with a child) or complex (i.e. trying to solve a problem). Consider another mobile device like in-car DVD players. Believe it or not some drivers actually try to watch movies on these devices while they drive. A truck driver involved in a recent fatal crash admitted he was watching a movie on a mobile DVD player. Even if the DVD player is in the back for the kids, the sounds from the device can still distract a driver. If an emotional phone conversation can distract a driver, what about the suspense movie from the device showing the backseat? PDAs and even laptop computers are other devices capable of taking a driver’s attention off the road. A driver might use these devices to look up an address while negotiating traffic. Or worse, try to enter a Mapquest search on his laptop while changing lanes. Even a mobile music device like MP3s can even divert driver’s attention. The best advice for driving safely is to keep the use of mobile, even hands-free devices to a minimum when you’re behind the wheel. Also See: cell phone terms. About
