Cellular Phone Donations Help Fight Domestic Violence

Since 1996, the Donate a Phone/Call to Protect campaign has accepted cellular phone donations. More than 2 million cell phone donations have been received by the foundation that supports organizations working to end domestic violence.

Consumers are encouraged to give their used cell phone to the program. Cell phone donations have two very positive results. First, donations help protect the environment from the potential hazard of dumping used phones in landfills. Second, the phones can benefit victims of domestic violence.

The Donate a Phone program recycles cell phones to help a variety of charities. Through Call to Protect, donated phones are refurbished and given to victims of domestic violence. These donated cell phones are lifelines for people in living in potentially violent situations. The phones are programmed to dial 911. Other donated phones are resold. The profits go toward grants that support agencies working against domestic violence.

To donate your cell phone, follow these simple steps.

  1. Make sure your phone is deactivated.

  2. Look on the Donate a Phone web site to see if there is a drop off site in your community.

  3. If there is no nearby drop off, mail your cell phone to: Call to Protect, 2555 Bishop Circle West Dexter, MI 48130-1563

Call to Protect also accepts donations of used cell phone batteries and chargers. Cellular phone donations are tax deductible.

Other programs affiliated with Donate a Phone also accept donations for charitable causes. These include Sprint Protect Connect and Nextel Buybacks.
