The next step toward prepaid cellular service is activating the phone. You can activate your TracFone online or by calling a toll-free number provided in the Box. Once you’ve activated your prepaid cellular phone, you buy airtime cards that contain additional minutes. Unlike some prepaid services, TracFone cellular minutes never expire as long as you keep your phone activated. You can track how many minutes are left on your prepaid phone by looking at the TracFone phone display.

To keep your prepaid service active, TracFone requires you to purchase and redeem an airtime card ever 60 days or once a year, depending on the type of card. If you allow your prepaid service to expire, you will have to pay a re-activation fee before you can use your TracFone cell phone again.
