Is Car Cell Phone Use A Symptom Of A Bigger Problem? |

May 08, 2005 By: Wendy Whittaker Is Car Cell Phone Use A Symptom Of A Bigger Problem? We seem to be conflicted about car cell phone use. The research indicates that distracted driving can cause accidents, yet in a poll of motorists who say they always dive safely, 44 percent admit they have used a cellular phone while driving cars. More states and foreign governments are enacting legislation against the use of car cell phones. At the same time, more car cell phone users are ignoring those laws. Why is it that we find it so hard to hang up (or at least take our hands off of the phone) and drive? There is subtle irony in cellular phone use in cars. We got our car cell phones so that we could be connected when were away from home. Where are we when we’re not at home? In the car. Hmm. It almost seems we’ve been conditioned to need to use our cell phones in the car. A recent study of students in Korea showed that many demonstrate symptoms of paranoia when they don’t have their car cellular phone with them or fear it might not be working. That sounds eerily similar to in-car phone users who will dig through their purse while driving just to make sure their phone is on. Perhaps the key to curbing dangerous use of cell phones in cars is to address the underlying problem—our addiction to being connected. Perhaps some one can develop a patch for car cell phone users to wear in the car. It can vibrate every once in a while just like their phone. Maybe cell phone companies will air advertisements that say, “Hey, you really don’t need to be in touch all the time. It’s okay to turn of your cell phone when you’re in the car.” Then again, maybe we just need to admit we have a problem and discipline ourselves to drive unconnected. Related Items About
