Verizon Wireless Launches High-Speed Wireless Data Service In New England

Verizon Wireless, operator of the nation’s most reliable wireless network, announced today the launch of its BroadbandAccess high-speed wireless data service in New England markets. BroadbandAccess, now available in Boston, Massachusetts, Providence, Rhode Island, Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut, and several local airports, is the fastest wide-area wireless Internet access service available in the nation with typical user download speeds of 300-500 kilobits per second (kbps).

“BroadbandAccess will serve New England area business people and those with a need for speed, whether they're in the office or on the road,” said Bob Stott, regional president, Verizon Wireless. “The service will boost our customers’ productivity and further set us apart as the acknowledged wireless leader in New England.”

BroadbandAccess coverage includes Boston and towns within the Route 95 beltway to Quincy south of Boston and Lynn and Lynnfield north and northeast of Boston. Coverage west of Boston and 95 includes Route 9 and the Massachusetts Turnpike to 495, extending northward along 495 to Route 93. Coverage south of Boston includes the 95 and Route 1 corridors to Providence through Cranston and Warwick. Logan Airport in Boston, T.F. Green Airport in Rhode Island, and Manchester Airport in New Hampshire all have service.

In Connecticut, coverage includes Fairfield County along Routes 84, 95 and the Merritt Parkway. Coverage extends beyond Fairfield County to North Haven on the Merritt and to Branford on Route 95. Additionally service is available in and around Greater Hartford to the northeast on Route 84 to Manchester, south to Rocky Hill, and southwest to New Britain. Service is also available at Bradley Airport, as well as the Foxwoods Resort & Casino and Mohegan Sun.

Other metropolitan areas launching today are: Chicago; Houston; Phoenix; Cincinnati; Orlando; Columbus and Dayton, OH; Jacksonville, FL. Major expansions have been made in many existing 3G markets, including New York City; Newark, NJ; Los Angeles; Philadelphia; Atlanta; Miami, Tampa and West Palm Beach, FL; Baltimore, MD; Kansas City, MO; and Milwaukee, WI.

BroadbandAccess service is priced at $79.99 monthly access for unlimited use with a one- or two-year customer agreement. For a limited time, Verizon Wireless customers with unlimited use data plans can buy the BroadbandAccess PC 5220 card for $49.99 with a two-year customer agreement or $99.99 with a one-year customer agreement after $150 mail in rebate.

In addition to its ongoing annual capital investment program to build network capacity and coverage, Verizon Wireless expects to invest an incremental $1 billion nationally through 2005 to further deploy its high-speed service, wide-area network, powered by Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) technology. For the past four years, Verizon Wireless has committed over $4 billion annually to its capital investment program.
