Using A World Phone Whilst Traveling
When planning my dream round-the-world trip, I had more than one request from friends and family to “keep in touch.” Easier said than done, with the itinerary I had planned! I wasn’t looking forward to hunting down internet cafes, finding local currency and coins for expensive calls from a phone booth, or navigating the post office of a foreign country. Instead, I purchased a Mobal World Phone, and set off on my adventure.
Landing in Paris, France, was an amazing first destination. I was able to call my family as soon as I landed and let them know I was there safe and sound. They were so pleased to hear from me, and I know they were more at ease knowing I was able to communicate with them whenever I needed to. After my first full day of travel seeing the Louvre Museum and the Eiffel Tower, I sent a quick text message to a friend of mine who loves art. Much simpler than the crowded internet cafes I had seen around town, full of tourists. Cheaper, too!My second stop on the itinerary was Morocco. This was where I really started to appreciate the advantages of having a world phone with me. While it is relatively safe for visitors, it was much less Westernized than Paris. I felt safe exploring the alleyway markets of Tangier with the knowledge that I had a working cell phone with me in case of emergencies. Plus, there were far fewer opportunities to use an internet cafe or a pay phone here, and the hotel I stayed at offered international phone calls at a very expensive rate. I visited Marrakesh to visit the ruins in Medina, and ate more than my fair share of delicious foods in the Djemaa El-Fna market.
I headed back up to Spain after my trip to Morocco, and explored the city of Barcelona. I loved the laid-back vibe of the city, and of course the exciting nightlife! After so long away from home, I was in need of a call home to family. It was amazing to be able to relax on the beach Platja de la Barceloneta at sunset and speak to my loved ones with a crystal clear connection. So much better than making the call from my hotel room! By now I was used to the phone and all it’s functions, and it was just as easy to use as the cell phone I had back home–except this world phone happened to work in over 170 countries!
As sad as I was to end my trip, it was good to know I was heading home. Of course, no trip can be perfect, and my flights were delayed and then diverted on the way back to my home of New York. No problem on my end, thanks to the world phone. I ended up calling my friend who supposed to pick me from the airport, and let him know the new estimated times of arrival for my flight. I know he was grateful, as I ended up getting home a few hours later than expected, and he didn’t have to wait! I’ll definitely recommend the phone to anyone traveling who want peace of mind on their journey, and want a convenient and inexpensive way to keep in touch while you’re away from home.
